100 gigabit ethernet coming to a desktop near you

via Sun’s HPC Watercooler

The IEEE announced in late November that the next Ethernet standard will be 100 Gbps.

IEEE’s Higher Speed Study Group (HSSG), the group that works on these things, picked 100 Gbps over intermediate contenders like 40 and 80 Gbps, and even faster options like 120 Gbps. A completed standard could appear as early as 2009.

Wikipedia’s got a good overview and links to more detail.

a recent “network week” has a decent article on this; but lead me to believe that there will probably a 40Gbps interim solution.

I can’t find the article; can you give me a pointer? It would be interesting to find out why their story conflicts with everyone else’s (or maybe just my understanding of everyone else’s story).
