Dell and the Barcelona Opterons

Ah, the inscrutable world of processor code-names. They’re a double threat: meaningless AND difficult to remember. For those of you not in the cool kids club, Barcelona is AMD’s quad core Opteron.

There is speculation that Dell and AMD may be close to a deal that will have Dell shipping Barcelona-based machines soon after they are available mid year. From The Register:

“It’s during product transitions when OEMs have traditionally chosen to broaden their product portfolios,” AMD’s VP for servers and workstations Randy Allen told us in an interview. “Barcelona would represent another one of those inflection points, and Dell would be the most likely to (expand their product line).”

Dell is a long-time stronghold of Intel processors, and only began shipping its first two AMD processors in October of last year.
