Xilinx announces 3D graphics acceleration for auto makers

This was announced way back on the 8th at CES and I missed it, but Xilinx demonstrated a 3-D hardware accelerator core targeted specifically for the automotive industry.

From the release:

High-end 3-D navigation, hybrid and reconfigurable clusters, multi-use center stack displays, and automotive infotainment require enhanced processing power as well as automotive qualified devices to make these emerging applications a reality.

Why do you care?

I think this might matter for us based on the commoditization argument: the more of these that are gobbled up by other industries with really large volume, the more likely that pricing and performance will move in the right directions for HPC.

Also, the better these guys get at knowing how to purpose FPGA systems across platforms and applications the better the odds are that we’ll have the know how needed to actually use these things in practical, general HPC.
