Sun's big announcement: Constellation

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

The covers on the impending Sun HPC announcement we pointed to yesterday have lifted a little. And if you’re at the International Supercomputing Conference in Dresden, Germany, you’ll get to see the whole thing happen first hand.

Sun is taking the wraps of the gigantic system it’s building for the Texas Advanced Computing Center in Austin and giving it a name and a SKU. The Solaris 10 based system is to be called “Constellation,” and it’s billed as the industry’s first open petascale environment.

Sun logoThe system combines ultra-dense, high-performance computing, networking, storage and software into an integrated system that delivers massive scalability, dramatically reduced complexity and breakthrough economics. Based on proven, open industry standard technologies and the Solaris 10 Operating System (OS), Sun’s HPC solutions can quickly scale to allow for rapid deployment and faster time-to-results than competing HPC solutions.

And…come on, you saw this coming, right…it even has a green angle. The release promises “improved energy consumption by 70 percent.”

The Constellation preview will happen at 6 tonight in Germany. Big shout out to Rich at Sun who got this news to me at 04:38 in the AM.

The very curious will find more info on Sun’s Constellation product preview page.
