Software RAID solution adopted for enterprise HPC storage

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

I thought you might be interested in hearing about this. Ciprico and Nor-Tech announced a partnership(PDF) last week that will incorporate Ciprico’s RAIDCore software-based RAID controllers into Nor-Tech’s hardware. This follows a port by Ciprico of the RAIDCore stack over to CentOS.

RAIDCore’s utilization of the host motherboard’s processing power coupled with its ability to create virtual arrays of up to 32 drives with any configuration of 4, 8, 12 or 16 port boards using the company’s unique controller spanning technology, allow the system to deliver in excess of 1GB/s transfer rate to and from drives with low latency and without hardware cache bottlenecks.

I hadn’t heard of Nor-Tech before this announcement; apparently they’re the 2nd largest manufacturer of custom server equipment in the US.

I’m not a storage guy so I’d love to get some feedback from you…what do you think? Is this good news?

  1. I’m a bit puzzled by this, since Linux’s MD has been doing SW raid for a long time. the raidcore cards appear nice, but it’s hard to tell whether they’re any better than cheaper ones (4pt sata2 for >$300 doesn’t seem very competitive). achieving 1 GB/s from 32 disks isn’t particularly noteworthy either.
