Even small schools making strategic decision for HPC

Butler University, a small liberal arts and sciences university in Indianapolis, announced today that they’re dedicating part of the revenue from their fundraising campaign to add HPC resources to the university’s educational resources. Although small Butler is ranked 5th in U.S. News & World Report’s 2006 ranking of the top Midwest Universities with a Master’s program, and has been in the top 10 on that list since 1994.

“The supercomputer really allows us to move into a new area and a new era of computing, physics and mathematics––and probably biology and chemistry as well,” Zimmerman said. “We will be one of the few institutions of our size with a supercomputer, and it will allow students to do real serious parallel programming on campus––projects that otherwise they would not have been able to do.”
