ORNL buys IBM

Given ORNL’s recent close partnership with Cray, this story is very interesting – that ORNL will soon be installing 2 racks (27 TFLOPS) of IBM BlueGene/P. Public details are scarce, and the article uses the safe phrase “… is expected to announce …” although the article does present a quote from Thomas Zacharia, noting the BG/P’s high speed network and high density. I’m sure the community will be watching the side-by-side operation (comparison) of the two MPP systems (i.e., the BG/P and Cray’s XT3), and equally how ORNL manages the side-by-side partnerships with IBM and Cray.
