SGI announced today that is has built the largest FPGA-based supercomputer. Once installed the machine ran the Blast-n bioinformatics application 900 times faster than a traditional compute cluster. The benchmark matched 20 nucleotide base pairs against 600,000 queries in 33 minutes on the new system. The previous system, containing 68 Opteron-based nodes, required nearly three weeks to run the same benchmark. The system contained 70 FPGAs.
