The Danish Meteorological Institute announced it has selected the Cray XT5 system to enhance its numerical weather forecasts and continued climate assessment using ocean and atmosphere models.

Cray logoOur goal for the new high-performance computing system is to enhance our ability to produce highly reliable numerical weather forecasts and develop and run numerical models of the ocean and atmosphere for climate assessment,” said Peter Aakjaer, director general of DMI. “The extreme scalability and unprecedented sustained performance of the Cray XT5 supercomputer will allow us to run an operational weather forecast with more than 10 times the calculations and I/O throughput than we can with our current system.”

The system, valued at EUR 6 million, is scheduled to be installed in the second half of 2008.
