No injuries reported.

You may recall that the recently re-competed Army High Performance Computing Research Center (AHPCRC) contract was award to a team led by Stanford. In case you missed all that, here’s the 411:

The Army is funding a $105 million, five-year agreement with a consortium of four universities and NASA. Charbel Farhat, a Stanford professor of mechanical engineering, will direct the multidisciplinary research center, which includes teams of engineers and scientists at Morgan State University in Maryland, New Mexico State University at Las Cruces and the University of Texas at El Paso.

They held a ribbon cutting this week out west to celebrate the award and to highlight what’s coming down the pipe for them. The ceremony included talks by Stanford president and computing legend John Hennessy and John Parmentola, the director for research and laboratory management for the Army.

I’ve heard that the previously existing AHPCRC equipment was moved out to California from its prior home in the frigid north (Minnesota). Evidently they are getting some new gear, too

In a couple of weeks, trucks will roll up to the Mechanical Engineering Research Laboratory to deliver a new supercomputer, a 1,600-core Dell cluster, a tangible sign of Stanford’s new connection with the U.S. Army.
