SGI has announced that it recently inked a new contract to deliver a series of SGI Altix systems to the North German Group for High and Highest-Performance Computers [HLRN]. The new machine will operate at over 60 times faster than the current HLRN compute resources. Using pooled financial resources from the six German states, the new machine will include ~25,000 processors. The delivery will be split into two phases. The first phase going in at HLRN’s facility in Berlin, the second to their facility in Hannover. The two systems will be connected with a high performance data link deemed “HLRN Link.”

The HLRN-II represents a tremendous advance for basic research in northern Germany. We’re pleased that the Regional Computer Center of Lower Saxony will also contribute its services to Leibniz University Hannover in the future,” said Prof. Gabriele von Voigt, Managing Director of the Regional Computer Center of Lower Saxony. “With the new SGI Altix system, the HLRN Group will be equipped, for the first time, with more than 25,000 processor cores,” said Herr Prof. Alexander Reinefeld, ZIB Berlin.

Once the new installation is complete, HLRN will have roughly 312 Teraflops of peak compute, 90 Terabytes of main memory and 2.3 Petabytes of SGI InfiniteStorage.
