INLThe Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory has announced the opening of its high performance computing center. The new HPC center’s primary role be providing modeling, simulation and visualization capability for reactor development; thus furthering the INL goal of becoming the nation’s leading nuclear energy research laboratory.

INL’s new Computing Center will be a key tool as the lab continues to lead the way in the design and development of next generation nuclear reactors to provide safe, emissions-free nuclear energy in the United States,” Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy Shane Johnson said. “Advancements in nuclear technology will help spur the expansion of nuclear energy to meet growing energy demand around the world.”

A few highlights from the lab’s HPC center:

.: INL’s first machine is ranked at #64 on the Top500 [2048 processor SGI Altix ICE 8200]

.: 3,700 sq.ft. of raised floor space; expandable to 10,000 sq.ft.

.: Incorporation of energy efficient data center design techniques; including a backup generator capable of running on 15% biodiesel.
