Rackable to Include IBM Blades in ICE Cube

rackableRackabale has announced that they have inked an agreement with IBM to allow IBM’s BladeCenter servers in the Rackable ICE Cube modular data center.  The agreement with include the IBM BladeCenter T or HT systems, which both meet the Network Equipment Building System [NEBS] Level 3/European Telecommunications Standards Institute [ETSI] requirements.

Rackable Systems sees this strategic relationship as a further opportunity to provide our customers with unique, built-to-order solutions,” said Mark J. Barrenechea, president and CEO of Rackable Systems. “Including IBM BladeCenter in ICE Cube enables Rackable to expand its market reach to new customers, new fault tolerant workloads and new markets seeking products that meet NEBS requirements.”

This is an interesting move on behalf of Rackable.  Expansion of marketshare in this very niche end of the data center industry may or may not prove to be the most worthwhile investment.  I am, however, interested to see how Rackable has engineered the IBM BladeCenter chassis into their half-depth rack configuration resident in the ICE Cube.  Maybe they’ll bring one to SC08.
