The Department of Science and Technology has announced plans to lay down a high-speed South African National Research Network, dubbed SANREN.  The announcement was made by Minister Mosibudi Mangena during the Southern African Telecommunications Networking and Applications Conference [SATNAC] in Eastern Cape.

To ensure our researchers and scientists interact seamlessly with their peers globally, we are implementing Sanren as part of our growing cyber infrastructure initiative,” explained Mangena.

…and one of the first pilots

Sanren has enabled South African radio astronomers to participate more fully in the electronic-Very Long Base Interferometry project,” noted Mangena.

That projec provided a 10Gbit ring network connection from the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory [Hartrao] to the CSIR main campus.  So far, all the major universities and research institutions have connections as well.

Very cool to see this happening in South Africa.  For more info on the project, read the full article here.
