The University of Houston Research Computing Center [RCC] in collaboration with the Texas Learning and Computation Center [TLC2] recently purchased and installed a new cluster decorated with Sun logos.  The new machine, developed at a cost of ~$200k, contains 82 Sun machines equipped with 2.3Ghz AMD Opteron processors and an Infiniband interconnect.

It runs faster, has increased capacity for networking, more central processing units and more memory,” [Jeff] Sarlo [Systems Administrator] said.

The machine, named after the Scottish mathematician James Clerk Maxwell, will initially serve the departments of Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics, the Cullen College of Engineering and researchers on TLC2.
