Voltaire Announces 40Gb/s Director Switch

Voltaire has announced the latest addition to their Infiniband switching product line.  The Grid Director 4700 is the follow on to the Grid Director 4036, announced last December.  The 4700 features 324 ports of Infiniband, all at 40Gb/s.  They have also included an option to double this to 648 ports with double density fabric boards.

We’ve already deployed Voltaire’s 40 Gb/s InfiniBand edge switch and are experiencing improved application performance for our Applications Research and Development cluster, which translates into solving more complex problems in less time,” said Goldi Misra, Head – High Performance Computing Solutions Group, C-DAC, Pune. “A high-port count switch leveraging 40 Gb/s InfiniBand such as the Grid Director 4700 will give us increased bandwidth and throughput to capitalize on the processing power of multi-core servers and scale up to thousands of nodes.”

The 4700 is a 19U chassis that will require roughly 6.5watts per port of power, so plan accordingly.  For more info on the new switch digs from Voltaire, read the full release here.
