BNP Paribas Corporate and Investment Banking announced last week that they have deployed a new CPU-based computer

nVidia logoA significant portion of the calculations, about one TeraFlop (one thousand billion calculations by second), performed for Global Equities and Commodity Derivatives (GECD) is transferred to a Graphical Processing Unit based platform. This allows a 100 fold increase in the amount of calculation achieved per Watt. This new platform, containing two NVIDIA Tesla S1070 consuming 2kW will replace more than 500 traditional CPU cores consuming 25 kW.

Among the advantages cited by the bank accruing from the deployment is the reduction in evironmental impact. Andy Keane, general manager, GPU Computing, NVIDIA had this to say in an email

“In the current financial climate, the pressure on financial institutions to minimize risk and increase the accuracy of their models is huge. On top of that, the real estate and energy costs associated with traditional server installations have become prohibitive,” added Andy Keane, general manager, GPU Computing at NVIDIA. “As BNP Paribas CIB’s example clearly demonstrates, Tesla can provide a ‘silver bullet’ which addresses all these issues, combining transformative performance increases with reduced operational and environmental costs.”
