Anticipation over early Istanbul

Back in late April we posted news that AMD’s 6-core Istanbul processor was going to be released earlier than scheduled, with server OEM partners shipping in June. This week John Fruehe has put up a blog post at AMD reaffirming the early release.

AMD logoCustomer anticipation over “Istanbul”, AMD’s new six-core AMD OpteronTM processor, is growing every day.  Since late last month, when we indicated that the launch was pulling in due to the unprecedented quality of the silicon, the requests have been pouring in. More and more customers are asking when they can get their hands on one of these processors.  Soon is all we can say at this point, soon.

The factories are building out parts as we speak and we are ramping up production in anticipation of our launch.

Included in the post is a pointer to a video with Cray’s Barry Bolding,  Vice President of Scalable Systems, talking about the new chip.
