This one isn’t directly related to most of you, so I’ll make it quick. From Reuters on Wednesday

Yahoo! Inc. announced the availability of the Yahoo! Distribution of Hadoop at the Second Annual Hadoop Summit. The Yahoo! Distribution of Hadoop is based on code available from the Apache Hadoop project, an open source project of the Apache Software Foundation.

…The Yahoo! Distribution of Hadoop has been tested and deployed at Yahoo! on the largest Hadoop clusters in the world.

Of course you’ll remember that Hadoop is the file system and parallel execution environment insipired by Google’s MapReduce. According to the Wikipedia

Hadoop was created by Doug Cutting (now a Yahoo! employee), who named it after his child’s stuffed elephant. It was originally developed to support distribution for the Nutch search engine project.[6]
