Sun Microsystems issued a press release today detailing how Blue Sky Studios utilized their Sun Blade X6250’s to render the movie. In total, Blue Sky used 480 blades populated with dual Intel Xeon quad-core processors, packed into ten 6048 chassis. Engineers and designers took advantage of 120 Sun Ultra 24 workstations deployed throughout the company.
Sun’s collaboration with Blue Sky for this animated feature film was built on our innovative open network systems approach and our understanding of the HPC market, especially in a challenging economy,” said Lisa Sieker, vice president of marketing, Systems Group, Sun Microsystems. “The Sun Blade servers and Sun Ultra workstations deliver a compelling combination of performance and power efficiency that helped us beat out competitive offers.”
Quoting the Sun HPC Watercooler, if one considers the movie to be 90 minutes in length at 30 frames/sec, that’s 162,000 frames in total. This, just to render the final product. It does not include any incremental/nightly production work. Needless to say, the Constellation system was a very busy system throughout production.
