LSI Buys NAS Vendor, ONStor

lsiChris Mellor over at TheRegister wrote up an interesting in the storage world.  LSI, proprietors of a wide array of DAS and SAN devices, has purchased ONStor, makers of clustered NAS devices.  The deal is said to be worth roughly $25 million, which leaves ONStor’s investors at a significant loss.  Their claim to fame was NAS devices in the form of various clustered and gateway appliances.  Later, they moved into the ubiquitous world of iSCSI and other unified block/file storage methodologies.  However, unlike other NAS vendors, they never had much interest in high performance computing.  So, why the mention here?

LSI, on the other hand, has a large influence in HPC.  Vendors such as SGI, Cray, Sun [formerly StorageTek], Terascala and several others OEM LSI’s RAID and SAN devices.  These vendors are quite obviously aligned with the HPC market.  What does this do for LSI’s product roadmap in HPC?  One could feasibly expect LSI to release NAS devices specifically geared towards HPC at large.

Regardless of the outcome, this is an interesting buy.  You can read the full release here.

This development probably arose from the current financial crisis. A lot of other companies in other industries are experiencing buyouts necessary for their survival.
