NextComputing, a maker of small form factor and mobile servers, announced yesterday that it will be shipping a new “stream computing” server that will ship in the first quarter of 2010

In a compact 2U rackmount form factor, the NextStream is best suited to mission-critical applications requiring high-throughput data streaming and/or a mix of traditional CPU processing and GPU parallel processing.

…The NextStream supports either (3) single-width blades or (1) single and (1) dual-width blade. Each blade contains up to (2) AMD Opteron or Intel Xeon processors, for a maximum of (6) processors per 2U chassis. In addition, the dual-width blade option supports a full-length PCI Express slot and a full-length PCI-X 64-bit slot and up to 5TB (terabytes) of additional storage.

NextComputing is positioning this for financial services, image processing and 3D rendering, and military simulation and training. The server appears to be aimed at GbE with 2 GbE ports per blade and two integrated 4-port Gigabit Ethernet switches, although their are options with PCI Express slots that could host other interconnects.
