Jeff Nichols named ORNL’s new scientific computing chief

Jeff Nichols has been named the new head flops wrangler at ORNL, home of Jaguar and one or two other computers the size of small moons (I dropped a pen once when Buddy Bland was giving me a tour and it started to orbit the machine room). Nichols has been in this role as an interim since the previous associate lab director for computing and computational sciences, Thomas Zacharia, was kicked upstairs in April. From Frank Munger’s blog at knoxnews.com

In the internal announcement, ORNL Director Thom Mason said of Nichols:

“Jeff has played an essential role in our world-leading program of building, installing, and deploying ultrascale supercomputers and applying them to deliver forefront scientific discoveries for our customers in the Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and other federal agencies. I have no doubt that he will provide the leadership that we need to move to the exascale and continue to accelerate the delivery of the innovations needed to solve grand scientific challenges.”

According to Munger, the appointment takes effect 01 Oct. I’ve met Jeff several times, and he seems like a swell guy. Congratulations to him and to ORNL.
