Hey, even more ways that you can avoid work this Friday without the guilt of watching Twilight Zone reruns on Hulu — after all, these videos are work related.

PRACE, the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe, has made 16 HPC training videos available online at www.prace-project.eu/hpc-training. The footage was shot at a workshop on application porting and performance tuning at CSC, Finland (June 2009) and a Cray XT5 code-porting workshop at CSCS, Switzerland (July 2009).

The two-day application porting and performance tuning workshop, held at CSC, gave an overview of issues involved in porting and tuning codes on the PRACE prototypes. The lectures covered new programming models suited for future petaflop/s supercomputers, issues involved in selecting and using numerical libraries and best-practices learned from tuning and porting three scientific applications.

The three-day Cray XT5 code porting workshop, held at CSCS,  consisted of a series of lectures and “hands-ons” sessions covering fundamental through advanced code optimization and porting techniques for the Cray XT5 architecture including  TLB, cache and MPI optimization strategies as well as profiling using CrayPat and Apprentice2 tools. The presentations were delivered by John Levesque, Luiz De Rose and Roberto Ansaloni from Cray Inc.

The next PRACE training events will be held from October 13–15, at NSC in Linköping, Sweden, from October 14–16 in Cracow, Poland and from October 21–23 at BSC in Barcelona, Spain. PRACE produces more HPC training videos from these events.
