HPC stalwart Cray Inc. today announced that they’ve put Michael Piraino in as vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary.

PirainoWith 15 years of general counsel, executive, management and legal experience, as well a background in engineering, Piraino will be responsible for directing Cray’s legal affairs, and providing advice on legal and policy issues to the company’s management and Board of Directors.

“We are very excited to have Mike on board and leverage his wealth of both legal and management experience as a part of our leadership team,” said Peter Ungaro, president and CEO of Cray. “He has an impressive background, and his expertise and skill sets are a welcome addition to the company as we work to grow and expand our leadership position in the supercomputing market.”

Interestingly, Piraino started life doing real work (yes, I have the typical engineer’s attitude toward lawyers) as a propulsion engineer at Boeing. I predict he’ll sync up really well with Cray’s corporate culture, which is probably as close to a technical meritocracy as I’ve run up against in dealing with public companies (and yes, that is a highly qualified statement). Piraino is taking over from Kenneth Johnson, who is retiring.

“Ken has been a tremendous asset to Cray and I sincerely thank him for all of his efforts and outstanding contributions to the company,” said Ungaro. “Ken will be missed and, on behalf of everyone at Cray, we wish him all the best in his retirement.”
