ARSC Closing Virtual Reality Lab

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

The University of Alaska Fairbanks has announced that it will close its Discovery Lab.  The lab, which is run by the Arctic Region Supercomputing Center, says funding for the lab will be used for other computing projects.

Center spokeswoman Debra Damron tells the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner that the $250,000 needed each year to run the lab will be used to help operate a new data-storage facility and supercomputer.

The lab, which opened back in 2003, has played host to numerous research projects, tours and performing arts events.  Bummer.

  1. I was there when it opened believe it or not. Sad to hear it’s closing down.

Here’s a short video of 7 year old Saphire and 8 year old Megan learning about 3d worlds using the Power Wall in a cubic layout. (3 walls and a floor). Wow that was a long time ago. This was actually done before it opened up to the world. Children of nerds are so spoiled some times. (-:

It was some pretty neat technology at the time. Heck, still is.
