Last week Rutgers announced that it was part of a team that received $1M from Google for research into reducing energy use in datacenters
Google Inc. has awarded a two-year, $1 million research grant aimed at slashing energy usage in large Internet data centers to a team of computer scientists at the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB), Rutgers University, the University of Michigan and the University of Virginia. The company may award an additional $500,000 for a third year after reviewing the research program’s progress.
The Rutgers team will work directly on server power
Researchers will explore ways to create lower power modes, allowing parts of the computer to shut off while still allowing access to information — a challenge because computers can’t provide access to their memory when they’re asleep. The goal would be to reduce server power consumption by up to 50 percent.
The Rutgers team got the largest of $5.7M in grants that were awarded to 31 professors at 10 universities in the first-ever round of Google Focused Research Awards. Grants were also awarded in machine learning learning, use of mobile phones as data collection devices for public health and environment monitoring, and privacy.
