AMD outed as Magny-Cours show up on eBay early

AMD logoEarly this week Oakville Mehlville Computers listed four G34 socket 12-core Opterons for sale eBay UK. This is interesting because the product isn’t shipping yet, and at the time we didn’t have a window into whether AMD was on schedule with the launch (the auction is over, with no bids according to eBay).

The listing was apparently enough to prompt AMD to respond: John Fruehe, the Director of Product Marketing for Server/Workstation products at AMD, posted an update on production on his blog. According to him, he chips entered production last month

Production began last month and our OEM partners have been receiving production parts this month.  We have had a few select end customer opportunities that have been fulfilled, but it is nothing we can talk about publicly.

As a matter of fact, we were not planning to talk about any of this just yet, but earlier this week, someone tried to offer products that they claimed were “Magny-Cours” processors for sale on the web.  Obviously the message about 12-core goodness with incredible value is making it out into the market, so much so that somebody wanted to jump on the bandwagon.

Fruehe goes on to talk about launch before the end of this quarter, which puts it any time in the next 4 weeks or so. Right on (the last) schedule I saw from AMD.

  1. Can any motherboards handle this yet?

  2. Surely the answer is yes (I’m thinking of Tyan’s S8812, for example), but I doubt you can buy said motherboard yet because of AMD’s product release rules.
