HPC Confusion in Holyoke

Those of following the recent news in Massachusetts that a new supercomputing center will be popping up somewhere near Holyoke have probably noticed a serious gap in information.  Ten months after the governor of Massachusetts declared the project “funded”, there have been few concrete details released to the public.  According to an article in today’s Republican [online edition], the nice folks in Holyoke are becoming a bit frustrated.  They want to know how the project will affect local jobs and revenue as well as exactly where the state plans to plant the new HPC site.

I’m finding people are feeling a little bit frustrated,” Councilor at Large Aaron Vega said last week.

Gov. Patrick is committed to this project. … The process is moving forward with all the collaborators and we plan on having an announcement in the not-too-distant future, which is all I can say,” [Governor Patrick’s spokesperson] said.

The project has some big-name corporate backers such as Cisco Systems Inc., of San Jose, Calif., and EMC Corp., of Hopkinton.  Academic partners include the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, along with the University of Massachusetts and Boston University.
