AMD reports Q1, posts profit

Although not strictly HPC companies, the two major chip manufacturers do make the stuff that makes our machines go (and in Intel’s case, some of the software too), so I think it’s worth a quick mention to cover their financials briefly.

AMD announced Q1 results last week, and did reasonably well. The quarter ended just as Magny Cours was announced, so that platform’s sales didn’t contribute to income in Q1

AMD logoAMD (NYSE:AMD) today announced revenue for the first quarter of 2010 of $1.57 billion, net income of $257 million, or $0.35 per share, and operating income of $182 million. The company reported non-GAAP net income of $63 million, or $0.09 per share, and non-GAAP operating income of $130 million.

While profitable, that is $17M less than AMD made in Q4 2009; notably, AMD lost money in the first three quarters of 2009. Margins are also up, rising from 43% in Q1’09 to 46% in Q1’10.

AMD’s server and desktop processors unit revenues dropped 5% from Q4 last year, and the graphics business was also down 3% from the same period.

Much more in the release and in the financials.
