Be a part of the best technical community in the world through SC10's education, diversity, and volunteer programs

You know someone who is — or should be — interested in HPC. Whether an educator, a student, or a really talented young scientist with an algorithm that might change the world, if only she knew where to start to make the code run on 10,000 cores.

Make the world a better place today by telling that person about some of the SC10 programs to bring HPC’s goodness to the rest of the world

SC10 logo“The global computing community’s continued success in applying high-performance computing to the great challenges of our time depends in good measure on bringing new people and ideas into the HPC fold; there is no better place to make that happen than SC,” said Jennifer Teig von Hoffman, SC10 Communities Chair. “HPC and advanced networking have become a critical component of a growing worldwide cyberinfrastructure and it is important for that same global diversity to be reflected in the HPC community.”

SC’s Broader Engagement Program “offers students, faculty and professionals from groups that have traditionally been underrepresented in high-performance computing (HPC) an introduction to SC through networking and technical sessions.” This is a really cool program that includes sessions before the conference to bring newcomers up to speed on what we do so they can actually get something out of the conference, and a mentor/protégé program.

The Education Program introduces undergraduate and pre-college teachers to HPC through a four-day workshop during the conference, with additional opportunities for engagement throughout the year.

If you are a student interested in HPC, a great way to meet people in our community and learn what we do is to take part in the Student Volunteer Program. In exchange for helping out with the management and operation of the conference students receive conference registration, housing, and food. Some travel support is available, see the web site for more.

Also, there’s a Student Job Fair

As a part of the Broader Engagement Program, the SC10 Student Job Fair will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17. Last year, more than 100 students participated in the SC09 Student Job fair in which more than 30 representatives from government and industry, research labs, academic institutions, recruiting agencies and private industry met with students to discuss research opportunities, temporary and permanent employment opportunities, co-ops and internships.
