When AMD formally launched its high-end SKU for the Magny Cours platform (the Opteron 6100, designed for 2- and 4-socket mobos) at the end of March, there weren’t many choices for a 4 socket offering from a Tier 1 systems vendor. HP launched the 6100 in 2P configurations, but that was it. A little odd considering that AMD has been pushing this shift as the move that would kill the “4P tax.”
This week HP finally stepped up with 3 4 socket options. According to AMD’s John Fruehe these are your options as of this week
- HP ProLiant DL585 G7 – a 4P platform with 48 DIMM slots that lets you get to 192GB with the cheaper 4 GB DIMMS.
- HP ProLiant BL465c G7 –A single blade, two 10 GbE controllers on board (not so relevant for HPC), and 16 DIMM slots.
- HP ProLiant BL685c G7 –4P blade, 32 DIMMS, four GbE controllers.
