Just a couple of quickies since, while AMD and Intel are critical to modern HPC, modern HPC is not critical to their profit. Nonetheless, your situational awareness demands at least a watercooler knowledge of a couple facts about their financials. Interestingly, while both companies reported record quarters, only one made money.

First, Intel reported record second quarter results

Intel logoIntel Corporation today reported second-quarter revenue of $10.8 billion, up 34 percent year-over-year. The company reported operating income of $4.0 billion, net income of $2.9 billion and EPS of 51 cents.

Interestingly, Atom revenue was up 16% sequentially, and Data Center Group revenue was up 13 percent with record server microprocessor revenue.

Second, AMD reported record quarterly income, but without the profit

AMD logoAMD today announced revenue for the second quarter of 2010 of $1.65 billion, a net loss of $43 million, or $0.06 per share, and operating income of $125 million. The company reported non-GAAP net income of $83 million, or $0.11 per share, and non-GAAP operating income of $138 million.

AMD has had a bad run, losing money every year since 2007. A quick glance at Google Finance shows that Intel has been profitable for at least the past 4 years.
