A team from Pennsylvania State University, Oak Ridge National Lab, Hewlett-Packard (HP), and the University of Michigan recently received a $3M (USD) award from the US Department of Energy for work on a three-year project to examine advanced architectures and critical technologies for exascale computing. The award is part of an effort managed jointly by the DOE and DARPA to explore approaches for dealing with key barriers on the path to exascale computing.

Penn State’s Yuan Xie, whose previous research has included work in design techniques for stacked chips and non-volatile memory, and his partners propose plan to leverage Xie’s earlier work to identify the most promising hardware and software solutions based on these technologies in order to address the reliability, energy, and performance requirements in the future exascale systems.

Xie, who has been at Penn State since 2003, is the recipient of several notable awards including the NSF CAREER award.
