Oxford Researcher Calls for CERN-Level Effort Dedicated to Climate Research

Is it time for a CERN for Climate Studies? Professor Tim Palmer from Oxford has been championing the need for such a dedicated facility to help predict and model climate change.

We do not have sufficient computing power to solve the equations of climate science with sufficient accuracy,” argues Palmer. “A truly international climate-prediction facility would allow the dedicated use of cutting-edge exascale technology for understanding and predicting climate, for the benefit of society worldwide.”

Palmer believes we need to start planning now for a truly international climate-prediction facility on a scale of CERN if we are to have any chance of addressing this global problem. Read the Full Story (PDF).

The problem with climate modeling is not a lack of processing power; it is the lack of data.
