This week SGI announced that it has shipped over 500 SGI Altix UV systems since June 2010. A recent shipment to LRZ (Leibniz Supercomputing Centre) in Munich is being used for problems requiring large shared-memory solutions for research, image processing and genomics.

SGI Altix UV is the world’s fastest and most scalable shared memory supercomputer. It has been selected by many of the world’s leading companies for its superior performance, standards-based operation and ease of use. With the new Intel Xeon processor E7 product family, Altix UV delivers enhanced capability for managing complex workloads such as database management, fraud detection, signal processing, real-time analytics, and complex scientific and engineering simulations. As the world’s most scalable x86 platform, customers can deploy standard Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows-based applications to the maximum scale possible of 256 physical cores and 2 terabytes of memory. Altix UV 1000 with 256 cores of Intel Xeon processor 7500 series and 2 TB of memory has four times the x86 scalability of HP and 2.6 times the scalability of IBM.
