Brian Proffitt writes that while Virtualization has a strong appeal in the enterprise, it has yet to catch on in HPC.
Realistically, there are few reasons why a virtualization solution, when properly deployed, would not be appropriate for an HPC task set, as many of the early bugaboos have been removed by new innovation and performance streamlining.
Is virtualization coming to HPC? In a way, it’s already here. Hundreds of HPC customers are already using a form of virtualization today with ScaleMP’s Foundation software. And while HPC users may pine after VMware’s ability to scale and mirror resources on virtual machines with relative ease, as of this writing the company does not have an HPC product, nor does it support InfiniBand.
