Argonne's Mira Supercomputer Will be Faster than 58 Million iPads

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

One of the 10 Petaflop supercomputers in the works is the Mira system coming to Argonne National Las. In this interview, Megan Taylor Morrison discusses the Blue Gene/Q system with Michael Papka, deputy associate laboratory director for Computing, Environment and Life Sciences at Argonne.

So how fast is Mira?

You can compare Mira to an iPad to understand its capabilities. Mira will be approximately 10 petaflops (10,000,000,000,000,000 flops) and and an iPad is only 171 megaflops (171,000,000 flops). It would take more than 58 million iPads to equal Mira’s compute power. It would still not equal Mira’s integrated power, however, with its many special features.

Not that it matters, but It’s probably worth a mention that only 25 million iPads had been sold worldwide as of June 2011. Read the Full Story.

As an insideHPC reader i really need to know how much 10 petaflops is in terms of flops. I also love the fact that it is faster than 58M iPads. Thats an amazing achievement and benchmark.

All other details about the system is just noise, and i hate noise.

    • Geez, Schizo. Can’t we just be happy with the fact that they are no longer comparing it to a human with a calculator doing one operation per second?

can you tell me the insideHPC server capability in terms of iPads. I really need this information.

  3. Sounds like it’d be great for gaming or rendering in SecondLife. Will BestBuy carry it?
