NREL Selects HP for Water-Cooled Petaflop Super with Xeon Phi

HP’s Marc Hamilton writes that the DOE’s National Renewable Energy Lab’s new Petascale HPC system will be dedicated solely to renewable energy and energy efficiency research.

Relying on water cooling within the rack vs chilled air for most of its cooling, the NREL facility is anticipated to reach a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.06, meaning 94% of the energy used is delivered directly to the supercomputer, vs as little as 50% in the average data center.

According to an Intel press release, the new HP supercomputer will be powered by a combination of current 32nm and future 22nm generation Xeon processors and Intel Xeon Phi co-processors. Read the Full Story.
