U.S. Army Retreats from SC12

In response to new U.S. Army travel restrictions, the DoD High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP) has pulled their booth from SC12. Sources close to the matter inform us that no U.S. Army personnel, including executive level decision-makers, will be allowed to travel to non-DoD conferences for the remainder of 2012.

SC12 is not the only show affected by these cuts. According to Marcus Weisgerber at Defense News, the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) annual meeting and exposition in Washington felt the pain of these cuts with reduced attendance just last week.

As reported here, the new travel restrictions come in the wake of the GSA travel scandal that had lawmakers in an uproar this past Spring. The National Labs have since pulled their booths from the SC12 show floor as well, though they still reportedly will be sending more than 400 personnel to Salt Lake City.

These developments are definitely a real setback for SC12, which is just two weeks away. If these travel policies don’t change next year, vendors could find themselves questioning whether this conference attracts enough high-level customers to justify big-dollar exhibit costs.

  1. interesting says

Here’s the idiocy of it all……. many conferences have already been PAID for folks. There are NO refunds….. that’s hundreds of thousands of tax dollars “donated’ to these conference with this ill thought out policy.

  2. Strangely the Air Force (including executives) and Navy are still sending attendees. Nothing like consistency.
