Australian Researchers Making the Case for Long-term HPC Funding

Over at the Sydney Morning Herald, Trevor Clarke writes that Australian researchers are making the case for long-term HPC funding. Supercomputer centers can cost millions to run on an annual basis, and the current trend of funding such programs for only two years is not practical.

The need for a more sustained long-term approach, perhaps with the same level of assurance as we have for the more general requirement to publicly fund research, is required,” said Professor Cochrane from Queensland University of Technology. “Making this point does not in any way detract from the significant achievements of the period 2006 to 2013, but we need to understand that reliance on this infrastructure is an integral part of Australia’s future research and we must have a more sustained way of supporting it.”
