Cisco Readies Ultra Low Latency Ethernet usNIC

Over at the Cisco’s High Performance Computing Networking Blog, Jeff Squyres has posted some interesting details on the company’s upcoming ultra-low latency solution for HPC.

In short, usNIC is a software solution (firmware, kernel driver, userspace driver, and Open MPI support) for our existing 2nd generation Cisco Ethernet VIC hardware (Virtual Interface Card). If you already have 2nd generation Cisco VIC hardware, this is a free software update to what you already own.

According to Squyres, the usNIC is basically another “personality” to the flexible Cisco VIC. First demonstrated at SC12 and then later in a RichReport Podcast, the ultra-low latency solution firmware should be available for download sometime in August. Read the Full Story.
