US and UK to Collaborate on HPC for Competitiveness

Over at Lawrence Livermore, Donald B Johnston writes that the US National Labs are collaborating with their counterparts in the UK to help increase industrial competitiveness. As part of a memorandum of understanding signed this week by LLNL Director Parney Albright and Chief Executive John Womersley of the United Kingdom’s STFC, Livermore will share technology with Daresbury’s Hartree Centre.

One of our goals at STFC is to bridge the gap between science and industry,” said Chief Executive John Womersley of the United Kingdom’s STFC. “The agreement we’ve signed today will help us to exploit the full potential of high performance computing for the UK – from basic research through R&D to new product design. I am thrilled to be signing this agreement today as it takes significant strides toward translating cutting edge R&D into successful commercial opportunities, and will provide UK businesses and industry with the technology they need to be able to compete on a global scale.”

Initial joint projects with Hartree Centre will likely include the development of software tools that would allow industry to leverage Blue Gene/Q computing power for industrial and business applications. Read the Full Story.
