Over at Wired Magazine, Jason Stowe from Cycle Computing writes that utility HPC will be the single largest accelerator of human invention in the coming decades. To make his point, he cites a recent use case where $44 million in infrastructure was made available for groundbreaking science for an 11 hour job that cost just $4,372.

The automobile enabled an age of individual transportation, where you could do things that weren’t possible on a horse, like travel 50 miles in a day or have millions commute into a city daily. You can now compute 50 years in a day. Utility HPC changes how you must look at computation, and thus the science that drives your research or your business.
