Over at the Eduserve Blog, Charles Llewellyn writes that there are several reasons why virtualising HPC makes good sense.

Many people believe that the further you abstract applications from the underlying hardware, the further you reduce performance. However, this isn’t always the case. In some areas of HPC, virtualization can actually boost performance by allowing better coupling of CPU to memory and by helping applications that do not scale well vertically but do scale horizontally.
