Call for Proposals: HPC-Cloud App Experiments in Europe

A call for proposals for HPC cloud-based application experiments has been issued by the Fortissimo Project. Fortissimo is a new initiative launched in Europe specifically designed to assist manufacturers – especially SMEs – that have not yet realized the benefits of modeling and simulation (M&S) to boost their competitiveness.

Like small to medium sized manufacturers everywhere, these European SMEs – the so-called “missing middle” – are well aware of the importance of advanced simulation.  But many of them do not have the money and the internal resources necessary to take advantage of HPC-based M&S.

Fortissimo, which got underway in July of this year, aims to rectify the situation.

The full name of the project is “Fortissimo – Factories of the Future Resources, Technology, Infrastructure and Services for Simulation and Modeling.”  (The Factories of the Future initiative, launched in 2008, is part of the European Economic Recovery Plan.)

The project is coordinated by the University of Edinburgh and involves 45 partners, including manufacturing companies, applications developers, domain experts, IT solution providers, and HPC cloud service providers.  Fortissimo is funded by the European Commission.

The project will make advanced simulation accessible to industrial users, particularly SMEs, by providing a “one-stop shop” where hardware, expertise, applications, visualization and tools will be available and affordable on a pay-per-use basis. Fortissimo will provision simulation services running on HPC in the cloud. The project will also make appropriate skills and tools available in a distributed, internet-based environment.

This month Fortissimo is issuing an open call for participation in the project via application experiments.  The proposals are designed to expand the experiments for engineering and manufacturing simulation services already underway. Therefore, priority will be given to proposals that complement existing Fortissimo activities and directly address the needs of engineering and manufacturing SMEs.

The first call for application experiments closes on January 2, 2014.  For information, check out the Fortissimo Project.
