Teams Announced for HPCAC-ISC’14 Student Cluster Challenge

Student Cluster LogoToday the HPC Advisory Council (HPCAC) announced that 11 university teams from around the world will compete in the HPCAC-ISC 2013 Student Cluster Competition. The event takes place at ISC’14 in June 22-26, 2014 in Leipzig, Germany.

In a real-time challenge, the 11 teams of undergraduate students will build a small cluster of their own design on the ISC’14 exhibit floor and race to demonstrate the greatest performance across a series of benchmarks and applications. It all concludes with a ceremony on the main conference keynote stage to award and recognize all student participants in front of thousands of HPC luminaries.

The 11 University-based teams include:

  • Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), South Korea
  • A combined team of students from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT),
  • Bentley University, Northeastern University (NEU), United States
  • The University of Edinburgh (EPCC), United Kingdom
  • Chemnitz University of Technology, Germany
  • University of Hamburg, Germany
  • University of São Paulo, Brazil
  • University of Colorado at Boulder, United States
  • A university to be determined in a run-off competition via the Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC), South Africa
  • University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), China HPC Advisory Council and the International Supercomputing Conference Announces University Teams for HPCAC-ISC 2014
  • Two additional university teams from China to be determined in a run-off competition via Inspur in early 2014

The HPCAC-ISC Student Cluster Competition is designed to introduce the next generation of students to the international high-performance computing community. We are pleased with the increasing worldwide mix of universities and students who are participating,” said Gilad Shainer, chairman of the HPC Advisory Council. “We received over twenty applications from universities worldwide for the eleven competition spots and the selection process was not easy. We hope to be able to host more universities in future competitions. This exciting challenge is an excellent educational opportunity for students around the world to showcase their knowledge and skillsets and to engage with leading commercial vendors. Together, the HPC Advisory Council, ISC team, and university teams from around the globe, all look forward to this competitive and fun challenge.”
