Ben Golub, CEO of Docker
Over at Datacenter Knowledge, Yevgeniy Sverdlik has posted an interesting interview with Ben Golub, CEO of Docker. According toe Sverdlik, Docker and a handful of other like-minded startups are poised to overhaul the way developers build applications and the way IT infrastructure admins serve them up.
Until Docker came around some people used containers but the use was very much restricted to large organizations, like Google, that had specialized teams and training. But the containers weren’t portable between different environments. With Docker we’ve made containers easy for everybody to use; we’ve made them portable between environments; we made them exceptionally lightweight and we built up a huge ecosystem around that.
Docker is an open-source project that automates the deployment of applications inside software containers, providing an additional layer of abstraction and automatization of operating system–level virtualization on Linux. Docker uses resource isolation features of the Linux kernel such as cgroups and kernel namespaces to allow independent “containers” to run within a single Linux instance, avoiding the overhead of starting virtual machines.
