bubbleIn this podcast, the Radio Free HPC team looks at the recent hack of U.S. government employee data. Hackers stole personnel data and Social Security numbers for every federal employee, including military records and veterans’ status information, address, birth date, job and pay history, health insurance, life insurance and pension information; and age, gender, and race data.

In a week where our little site got hacked the same week as Kasperski, Henry says there’s a lesson here for us all. It’s time start implementing Security-Enhanced SELinux.

Allegations that China was behind the hack met with a sobering update this week with revelations that the hackers gained access to classified personnel files.

This is potentially devastating from a counter­intelligence point of view,” said Joel Brenner, a former top counter­intelligence official for the U.S. government, speaking about the latest revelation. “These forums contain decades of personal information about people with clearances . . . which makes them easier to recruit for foreign espionage on behalf of a foreign country.”
