SUMMITEditor’s Note: The OpenPOWER European Summit has been officially postponed until later in 2016, but don’t miss the International Workshop on OpenPOWER for HPC on June 23 at ISC 2016

The OpenPOWER Foundation was established as a non-profit consortium to give its members the ability to innovate software/hardware solutions based on the POWER architecture. About half of the members are from academia. One of the Foundation’s goals is for OpenPOWER technologies to drive innovation within HPC. One example is OpenPOWER being selected by the HPC centers at Oak Ridge and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories for the upcoming leadership-class CORAL systems. As scientific workloads and demands increase at these facilities, advances are being enabled by OpenPOWER member collaborations throughout the HPC stack from the low-level hardware architecture up through application and next generation programming model designs. A particularly interesting aspect enabled through this new ecosystem is the tighter integration of processor and accelerators like GPUs and FPGAs through standardized high-speed, coherent interfaces. This workshop will provide a venue for the broader HPC community to further understand OpenPOWER technologies and discuss how they can be harnessed for HPC applications needs. The latest advances in OpenPOWER and how they might be used to address challenges regarding system architecture, networking, memory designs, exploitation of accelerators, programming models, and porting applications are of current interest within the HPC community and this workshop. Closely related topics also include OpenACC, OpenMP, OpenSHMEM, OpenUCX, MPI, Tools, etc. for the OpenPOWER ecosystem. As this is a novel architecture that is beginning to play a significant role in HPC, we expect this session to be well attended. Furthermore, since this is an emerging technology ecosystem, we endeavor to announce the workshop as early as possible to attract contributions.
